About This Volunteer Role
We are seeking a Volunteer Project Manager for our Human Resources team to help keep projects organized, timelines visible, and communication flowing—without the pressure or expectations of a paid corporate role.
This role is especially well‑suited for individuals who are interested in HR, exploring HR as a career path, or who already have some HR or people‑operations experience and want to deepen their skills in a supportive, mission‑driven environment.
This role is intentionally scoped for sustainability, making it ideal for:
Early‑to‑mid career professionals
Career switchers building PM or HR experience
HR professionals looking to add project management skills
Experienced professionals volunteering a few hours per week
Retired or semi‑retired professionals who enjoy mentoring and structure
Time commitment: ~3–5 hours per week
Expected term: 3–9 months (flexible and extendable)
What You’ll Do (Realistic & Shared Ownership)
You will support, not single-handedly own, HR projects. Responsibilities include:
Facilitate one weekly check‑in for the HR team (agenda provided)
Help track a small number of active HR projects and priorities
Learn our onboarding workflows and help document or improve them
Support communication between HR and partner teams (Recruiting, Internships, Marketing)
Gently follow up with volunteers on timelines and blockers
Help keep task boards, notes, or simple trackers up to date
Share brief project updates during meetings or via email
You are not expected to manage performance, enforce deadlines, or act as a people manager.
What We’re Looking For (Must-Haves)
Able to volunteer 3–5 hours per week
Comfortable organizing tasks, notes, or timelines
Clear and kind communicator in a remote environment
Interest in HR, nonprofit work, and strengthening American democracy
Willingness to work with and support other volunteers
Located in the U.S. with at least 1 hour/week overlapping with U.S. PT
Nice to Have (Not Required)
Exposure to project coordination, HR, or recruiting
Familiarity with Agile, OKRs, or task-tracking tools
Interest in mentoring or supporting newer volunteers
If you have more than 5 hours per week, there may be additional ways to contribute, but this role is intentionally scoped to avoid burnout.
What You’ll Gain
Hands-on project management experience in a national nonprofit
Resume-worthy work you can confidently speak about
Experience collaborating with a fully remote, mission-driven team
Exposure to nonprofit operations, HR, and recruiting workflows
References and networking with professionals across the U.S.
